January 1, 2016

Happy New Year

Photographer John Ricca’s Yosemite Falls In Clouds is a wonderful series of 3 photographs….perfection.  I met John and some of his wonderful photographs during recent photography workshops offered by the Yosemite Conservancy: Focusing on Nature…101 and 201… which he co-teaches with Keith Walklet.

“This is the third image in my Yosemite Falls In Clouds series that I made last month in Yosemite Valley in between co-teaching workshops.  The first was a wide angle view, and the second was a tight, up close, in-your-face view of just the lone pine tree.  This image is somewhere in the middle.  You can see the falls, the clouds, and the tree, but not more.

I hope that you have enjoyed receiving my periodic emails this year and will continue to do so in 2016.

Happy New Year!!
John

“Another image from the magical day in Yosemite Valley last month.  This image is of the base of Upper Yosemite Fall in the clouds.  I like the simplicity and the negative space.

Happy Holidays to all and a plentiful-pixel New Year.
John”

Dear Friends,
I greet you from Yosemite

Yosemite’s Snow Creek Cabin is open for the winter season!!!

Yosemite’s Wilderness staff opened the Snow Creek cabin for the winter season on Saturday, December 26th. The staff adds, “Please have a safe and enjoyable hut experience!”

I decided to provide you with a little information on the Snow Creek Cabin…..

The Snow Creek ski hut was built in 1929 as the initial cabin in the first hut system for ski-mountaineering in the Sierra Nevada. It was restored in 2006 by Yosemite’s Historic Preservation Office.

The ski hut stands at the edge of a wood near a swampy meadow in the highlands above Yosemite Valley.

Constructed of vertical logs and wood-shingled siding, with a wood shingle roof, the structure was patterned after ski huts in the European Alps.

The interior provided kitchen facilities and sleeping accommodations for about sixteen

people. The hut was intended as a base for high-mountain ski trips into the backcountry of Yosemite National Park.

The Snow Creek ski hut is located on the westerly slope of Mount Watkins at about 7,650 feet elevation. It is a two story, log pole structure supported by a cobblestone/concrete foundation.

A double layer of natural wood-shingled siding.   Two- and six-paned windows are wood-framed and covered with wood shutters, painted with a green saw-tooth design. The wood shingle gable roof is supported by exposed pole rafters, which are in turn supported by pole posts added later.

A lean-to storage shed had been added to the east, side. Two new metal flues for cooking and heating stoves protrude from the roof.

The wooden entrance doors have metal sheeting attached to the exterior surface. The entranceway has a rock and earth floor, while wooden planks cover the rest of the cabin’s floors.

Most interior walls and ceilings are fiberboard. The stairs to the second story are hewn logs with a quarter-section cut.

The cabin is at the edge of a wood with a well dug nearby.

About two hundred yards south of the cabin is a small dome, called Herringbone Hill from the pattern made in the snow by skiers climbing the slope on the way to the cabin.

The Snow Creek Cabin is now open for the winter.

Scenic Wonders in Yosemite West is open all year round.  When you visit Yosemite, stay in one of our vacation homes or condominiums….before your ski/snowshoe to the Snow Creek Ski hut….above beautiful Yosemite Valley.

Dear Friends,
I greet you from Yosemite

“Art from the Park submissions to Yosemite Conservancy’s first art competition were all of outstanding quality.  To choose just one original image from over 100 submissions was a challenging task for our review committee.

With much excitement we would like to announce Carolyn Hartling as our 2015 finalist. Carolyn’s winning image titled ‘Mountain Shapes and Shadows’ will be featured in a post on Yosemite Conservancy’s Facebook page this week.

Art from the Park will likely be an annual competition so please stay tuned for next year’s announcement.  Also, please stop by the Yosemite Art Center and say hello whenever you find yourself in Yosemite Valley.

There will be a reception on Thursday, November 5th at 5:30pm in the Yosemite Art Center.  Art created by park employees and park partners will be on display and we will celebrate all of your Art from the Park submissions with a digital slide show. Light snacks and refreshments will be provided.  Come help us celebrate the end of another successful season making art in Yosemite!

Best,
Yosemite Conservancy

*Art from the Park aims to bring together original pieces of art that represent Yosemite and a community that appreciates these creative endeavors to create something with beauty and meaning for park visitors. The art contest is open to all artists with a love for Yosemite. The winning artist will be offered a contract for the right to use a reproduction of the winning image on retail products developed by Yosemite Conservancy and $300. Retail products developed with the winning design will include but are not limited to t-shirts and other textile goods.”

Art from the Park was a fun contest to enter….and the reception was fun as well.  It was inspiring to see all the submitted artwork… during the slide show presentation.  It was great meeting Carolyn….the winning artist!

Scenic Wonders congratulates Carolyn and all the artists who entered the contest. Come visit Yosemite…artist heaven.  Stay in one of our cozy vacation homes or condominiums.  Call our reservation desk at 1-888-YOSEMITE.

Dear Friends ,
I greet you from Yosemite
The Story of Half Dome includes the an Ahwahneechee tale…and a geology story.

An Ahwahneechee Tale of Half Dome…

Long ago, two travelers, Tissiak and her husband, Tokoyee, fought with each other.  He became so angry that he began to beat her;  enraged, she hurled her basket of acorns at him.  As they stood facing each other, they were turned to stone for their wickedness  The acorn basket (Basket Dome) lies upturned beside Tokoyee (North Dome) and the rock face of Tissiak (Half Dome) is stained with her tears.

A Geology Story of Half Dome

Millions of years ago, the granite block of Half Dome was larger, but there was never a matching half.  Undercut by glaciers near the base, slabs of rock fell away from a broad vertical crack in the granite, leaving a sheer face.  Remnants of the missing rock still project from Half Dome’s rim.

There are more granite domes in Yosemite than in any other place in the world.  Massive granite domes form when large curved layers of rock “exfoliate” or slab off.

The Story of Half Dome continues to fascinate all who encounter the beautiful granite dome.

Look for Tissiak’s tears… tear stains….on Half Dome’s granite face.

Scenic Wonders invites you to experience the  beauty of Half Dome…..the enduring symbol of Yosemite. Stay in one of our beautiful vacation homes or condominiums in Yosemite West.  Call our reservation desk at 1-888-YOSEMITE.

Yosemite National Park’s entrance fee has been reduced to $25 for a seven-day pass for private vehicles from November through March. The reduced entrance fee aims to encourage visitation to Yosemite National Park outside of the busy summer season. The private vehicle entrance fee is $30 from April through October. “Fall, winter, and early spring are beautiful times to visit Yosemite National Park,” states Don Neubacher, Yosemite National Park Superintendent.

“We are hoping that the reduced fee during these times will encourage people to visit the park and take advantage of the less  crowded conditions and the spectacular seasons on display in Yosemite.” Yosemite National Park raised entrance fees earlier this year as part of a national initiative to standardize park entrance fees across the country. The Park adopted a seasonal entrance fee based on input received from the public during the park’s civic engagement period.

Additionally, in honor of Veterans Day on Wednesday, November 11, entrance fees to the Park will be waived. Fees being waived for Veterans Day include the Park entrance only. All other fees associated with camping, lodging, or activities within the Park are not waived. The fee waiver is good for Wednesday, November 11, Veterans Day, only. Yosemite National Park receives more than four million visitors each year, with many visitors coming to the Park during late spring and throughout the summer.

Yosemite National Park is open 365 days a year and offers ranger-led programs and activities yearround. Visitors coming to the Park should carry tire chains in their vehicles during the fall and winter seasons. – –end of Park statement. El Capitan and Half Dome are especially beautiful this time of year because of the clouds…Enjoy the watercolor of El Cap and Half Dome…..a digital watercolor from my original ipod photo. Enjoy taking your own photographs during this most special season….as autumn changes into winter…. Scenic Wonders invites you to stay in our warm and cozy vacation homes or condominiums. Ask about our special rates during the fall and winter seasons….excluding the holidays and some weekends.

Autumn Light in a snow covered

Autumn Light in a snow covered Yosemite West forest is simply beautiful in its simplicity this morning. Seeing things in a new light….the autumn light….since taking the Yosemite Conservancy photography workshop with Keith Walklet….is enlightening. I have been looking at this scene in the forest for years…..and only this morning felt inspired to take this photo. It all about the light.

Walk with your feet to find the right angle for your shot. …………catch the light….catch the joy of photography…..in Yosemite!!! We wonder…..when the light falls so perfectly on our subject…and….on us. It was one of those things….you just know you have to go back and take the picture…….even if your iPod has frozen. It has locked up. It did not respond when I would slide the screen where it says, “slide here to unlock.” I put my ipod to rest. I wiped off the drops of water falling from the trees…as the snow melts.

snow

After I wait a few minutes, I turn on the ipod and am happy to see the apple appear on the screen! I go back and take the shot….hoping the light will be just right. YES…..shadows and shapes….shadows of the incense cedars…shapes of the dogwood leaves….colors of the dogwood leaves…..and…the simplicity of the young dogwood tree enjoying the autumn snow…..looking so pretty.

Autumn Light in a snow covered Yosemite West forest is simply beautiful in its simplicity this morning…and all mornings…especially the autumn mornings……catch the light….catch the joy of photography…..in Yosemite and in Yosemite West !!! Stay in a beautiful Scenic Wonders’ mountain vacation home or condominium and enjoy the scenery of Yosemite West.
