Gold Country / Jamestown

WELCOME TO JAMESTOWN

The story of Jamestown is written in gold. The 1848 discovery of gold at Woods Creek sparked a colorful and rich history that continues today. Residents here work hard to retain the true character of this Gold Rush Era community.

You can still pan for gold on Woods Creek and Jamestown today is a great place to spend a few hours or a few days. There are a bounty of fine restaurants & specialty shops — all within walking distance. Speaking of location, Yosemite is an easy 90 minute drive from here and the best that Gold Country has to offer is right here, too.

Three of California’s largest fresh water lakes (Don Pedro, New Melones & Lake Tulloch) are all within 30 minutes from here so … of course … fishing, boating and water sports are popular pastimes for locals & visitors alike.

Some Motherlode communities are barely a “shell” of an earlier era. Not here. Jamestown is a thriving community. Tuolumne County’s still active cattle and lumber industry are headquartered nearby. This is where the foothills of the Sierra Nevada meet the sprawling Central Valley. Nearby Table Mountain offers great vistas and would you believe there’s still a Lover’s Leap a few miles out of town?

Residents and tourists alike enjoy the small town qualities of Rocco Park… located in the heart of Jamestown, right on Main Street. Local merchants regularly stage “gun fights” on the weekends. Don’t worry though. No one has been hurt. It’s just another (successful) effort in making this Gold Rush community indeed something special.

… and we save the best thing about Jamestown for last: As if an authentic Gold Country downtown weren’t enough, Jamestown is also home of the 1897 Railtown State Park … over a hundred years old and more popular than ever. Railroad buffs come here from literally all over the world. Visitors to the park can ride an authentic steam engine, visit the gift shop and tour the one of only 2 working roundhouses in the entire country.
