With one California Deparment of Transportation official declaring: “The weather’s been good to us this year”, Highway 108 over the Sonora Pass and Highway 4 over Ebbetts Pass are now open for traffic. Both highways opened their passes at 5pm, Friday, May 9.
Earlier there was some concern that January storm damage on Highway 4 was so bad that it might not open at all this summer but a mild spring has allowed Caltrans crews to work on both passes since March to remove snow and make necessary repairs.
This year’s early openings are good news for travelers connecting to Highway 395. Many Mono County businesses in the eastern Sierra do 80% of their business in the short summer season.
